No Fire at McKinley – IS 259 – Fumes from Adhesive
If you heard there was a fire or evacuation at McKinley Junior High IS 259 today….there wasn’t, everything is okay now. Official story here
Councilman Brannan shared:
At approx 10 AM today, IS 259 evacuated due to the smell of smoke on the 4th floor. Approximately 1,800 students and staff evacuated to the outer perimeter with approx 300 students moving directly across the street into St. Ephrem. FDNY responded and after checking out the situation they allowed students and staff to occupy the cafeteria and auditorium in the new wing. Several classrooms on the 4th floor were relocated to the auditorium.
The odor/smoke was determined to have come from a container of construction adhesive accidentally left on top of a radiator.
Approximately 33 students complained of trouble breathing from the fumes and have been set up in classrooms on the 1st floor to be evaluated by a doctor.
Air quality testing is also currently being conducted.
Then he shared:
The impacted area of the school, is an isolated section where construction is taking place and not readily accessible to the public.
24 patients were treated and released on scene, 9 were transported to Lutheran where they have been evaluated and released.
Clean-up crews are on scene conducting clean-up operations.
DOE advises that the school will be opened for normal operations Monday.
Hugs,
marlene
