The Olympics are Hard to Watch

Throughout the world, people are sitting in their homes watching the Summer Olympics (unless you are in London and you are lucky enough to see them live).  People love to cheer on Olympians from their home town.

For me, the Olympics are just so hard to watch. The television screen fills with images of smiling, determined young people trying to show they are the best at their sport. They compete in their event which probably feels like 20 minutes to them, but is actually a minute or two minute for spectators to watch. And then they are either victorious or severely defeated. And that’s it – there are no second chances.

Today we watched Jordyn Wieber, an American gymnast lose her chance at winning a gold in all around. Why? Because the rules changed and no longer are the top 24 gymnasts competing, but now the top two from each country have qualified to compete. Jordyn will still have a chance at a medal in the floor routine, but her Olympic dream of winning all around went out the window tonight. And as the crowd cheered for Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas, my heart hurt for Jordyn.  Here’s a young woman who trained her whole life for this moment to shine. And in an instant it was over and reporters were asking her how she felt. Jordyn attempted to duck out into a corridor while her team went to the television reporters, but she was told she wasn’t allowed out that way. We watched Aly Raisman beam with happiness over her win, while Jordyn sobbed in the background. I wish that the reporters had been more sensitive to Weiber  and not talked to her or even filmed her.
